The Flowering is a short poetic documentary exploring regeneration and care in South Manchester, centred on the words of Brehony’s grandmother, Pauline – a council estate resident who had received a letter from Manchester City Council informing her that her home of sixty years was to be demolished.
Pauline’s poetry narrates the film – attending to the growth of a new garden, the quiet rhythms of everyday environmental acts, and the experience of seeking light amid circumstances beyond one’s control. With contemporary music composition by Simon Knighton woven throughout, the work offers a meditation on resilience, renewal, and the deep relationship between people and the places they inhabit.
Exhibited at the Pavement Gallery, The Flowering holds space for a voice and a story that might otherwise go unrecorded – finding in one person’s relationship to a small patch of earth something that speaks to the wider human need to tend, to grow, and to belong.
